Winner will represent Egypt in EMEA regional finals in London19th February 2012: American University in Cairo became the 2012 CFA Institute Research Challenge champions in Egypt, beating four other Universities in a close final hosted by the CFA Egypt Society, the national chapter for CFA Institute, the global association for the investment profession, at the campus of American University in Cairo. The winning team will now represent Egypt at the EMEA regional final which will be held in London in March. The winners of this stage will then proceed to the CFA Institute international final to be held in new York – USA, in April. The preparation and competition were sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dale Carnegie, Arafa Holding, and American University in Cairo.

In addition to American University in Cairo, four other universities took part in the competition, including Ain Shams University, Cairo University, German University in Cairo, and Helwan University. each University was represented by a team of students who undertook a two month and half review of a public company. this year the teams reviewed Al Arafa Holding. each team was mentored by a professional research analyst and at the end of the process they wrote a research report which they then presented to a team of judges. The panel included CFA charterholders who hold senior positions in the investment industry:  mr. Ahmed Abouelsaad, mr. Wael Orban, mr. Omar Bedewy, mr. Mostafa Hassan, and mr. Moataz ElEtreby.  The panel also include Ms. Ingy El-Diwany who prepares for CFA level 3 exam.

The champions were selected based on their investment case, the delivery of the final presentation and their ability to answer and respond to detailed analysis from the judges.  As part of the prize, each student will have a trip to London.

Dr. Alaa Arafa, CEO of Arafa Holding, said that he is happy to expose the company to such professional student competition stating that he believes in continuing education and learning from others even about his company and inspired the participants by saying “I know that I do not know”.

Mr. Omar Bedewy, CFA, a member of the panel, said that he found Ain Shams University report is one of the best reports he came across during the last two years.

In congratulating the American University in Cairo, mr. Ashraf El Khatib, CFA, Vice President of the CFA Egypt Society, presented the Championship Trophy/Cup to the winning team, saying: ‘This competition provides an exceptional opportunity for students in Egypt to learn about the financial industry from the very best professionals who are actively working within the sector. all of the judges were very impressed with the quality of work presented by each team and the dedicated commitment of each student.  The competition was very fierce and the difference between the first three teams was less than one percent.   Participants should be proud of their achievements in representing their University in a national competition. We want to thank all the students, their faculty advisors and Universities for doing so well and for taking part. American University in Egypt will now have the added distinction of representing  Egypt at the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regional final in London. We wish them well for this next stage.’

He added: “The increasing popularity of the CFA program in Egypt is hence very positive and can only act as a catalyst to further develop the local financial and capital markets. this Challenge is a platform to showcase the financial talent available within the Middle East, to encourage young graduates to take up the unique and rewarding field of Investment Research as a career and to seriously consider the CFA program as the qualification of choice.”

Mr. El Khatib handed Helwan university “The Most Proactive Team” trophy for their role in creating and manage a facebook page that evolved to be the largest page for CFA challenges globally.  Dr. Rania Salem received “The best Faculty Advisor” trophy while Ms Mariam ElMenbawy, CFA received “The best Mentor” trophy.

The Challenge consists of the following levels of competition:

  • 89 local level challenges including the world’s top business schools

ADVANCED SORTING ARRAY FUNCTIONS – II

1329907210 83 ADVANCED SORTING ARRAY FUNCTIONS – II

ADVANCED SORTING ARRAY FUNCTIONS – II

 uksort(): this function is quite similar to uasort() except that the keys are sorted instead of the element values using a special customized sorting function, called the user-defined sorting function. It returns True on success and false on failure of sorting.

The customized function would work with the logic that…

The function should access two parameters of the array, compare and then return the integers based on relational operations.

The result should be:

If a = b, should return 0.

If a > b, should return 1.

If a < b, should return -1.

Syntax:

uksort (array, sorttype)

Array is the name of the array that is to be sorted.

Sorttype is a user-defined function for sorting the array.

Example

<?phpfunction sort_custom ($var1, $var2){if ($var1 == $var2) return 0;return ($var1 > $var2) ? -1 : 1;}

$Friends = array(“Classmate” => “Ram”,“Roommate” => “Laxmi”, “ChildhoodFriend” => “Sam”,“classmate” => “ram”, “childhoodfriend” => “sam”,“roommate ” => “laxmi”);

uksort($Friends, “sort_custom”);

print_r ($Friends);?>

The output of the above code will be:

Array([roommate] => laxmi[classmate] => ram[childhoodfriend] => sam[Roommate] => Laxmi[Classmate] => Ram[Childhoodfriend] => Sam

Don’t Do Azure Cloud (or any Development) on Your Own!

1329906024 43 Dont Do Azure Cloud (or any Development) on Your Own!

It seems like every time you turn around as a developer there’s a new technology you have to learn just to stay relevant. Moving applications to the cloud gets a lot of attention from management because they see it for the possible cost savings. What they don’t see is the amount of effort required on the part of the development team to make it happen. Microsoft provides a program that seeks to give developers the tools, training, and testing they need to get an application deployed to any number of Microsoft platforms, including all of Microsoft’s cloud offerings — Microsoft Platform Ready (MPR).

MPR is all about getting you the right resources to bring a solution to market faster. Microsoft categorizes theses resources into three major areas under the headings develop, test and market. once you identify a specific platform to target, you can begin to focus on what it will take to get from start to finish. Microsoft recognizes the importance of developers and has invested heavily in a multitude of training resources to ensure they have what they need to build applications targeted at a long list of platforms.

Over the years, Microsoft has consistently delivered some of the best tools available for developers along with the training and resources to smooth out that steep learning curve. Visual Studio 2010 is easily the most popular integrated development environment (IDE) on the market today. It supports a wide variety of languages and provides teams with the ability to take advantage of the latest software development methodologies.

The first thing you have to do to get started is sign up for the program at the MPR website. It’s free and painless if you already have a Windows Live ID. even if you don’t have the Windows Live account, it only takes a few minutes to get one. there are a few things you’ll be expected to have once you get ready to sign-up, including a company name and a website.  the next thing you’ll need is a name for your application although you can use anything including Test App.

Once you finish the registration process you’ll have access to a wealth of tools and training. the place to start is the MPR home page. there are a few things to keep in mind as you register and add apps. the MPR site attempts to present information pertinent to the application platform you specify. if you are looking to build a Windows Phone app, you should expect to see applicable content presented to you about developing for Windows Phone. Figure 1 shows you what questions you’ll need to answer when registering your app.

Figure 1 Registering an App

You can always add other apps for different platforms if you want to learn about developing for another target. This is probably a good point to mention the different platforms available through the MPR program. Figure 2 is a screen shot from the sign-up page and shows what you will see when you start the registration process.

Figure 2: Platforms used

Microsoft offers a wide range of training materials, many of which are free. the Jump Start videos for Windows Phone provide a great foundation for anyone looking to get up to speed quickly with developing for the platform. Microsoft’s Channel 9 website hosts these videos along with both the slides and code presented. there are a number of other Windows Phone related videos on the site as well including the Windows Phone 7 Development for Absolute Beginners series.

There are programming guides for each platform. the Programming Guide for Windows Phone takes you through each step of developing an app using how-to steps and code snippets. Code samples provide a great learning tool to help you see how to accomplish specific tasks. for the Windows Phone platform there are a multitude of fully functional sample apps for you to choose from. You even have a language choice between VB or C#.

There are a number of step-by-step guides to help you get your development environment configured properly including one for installing the Windows Phone SDK. the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) family of sites hosts most of this type of information and provides searchable content along with relevant links at the end of each article. It really comes in handy when you need information on how to test applications requiring dynamic data.

You might be the type that likes to just sit and read the documentation. if so, you might find the Class Library Reference for Windows Phone a good read. there are quite a few technical documents with titles like “Execution Model for Windows Phone” and “Frame and Page Navigation for Windows Phone Guide”.  Microsoft has also stepped up their presence on both twitter (@WinPhoneSupport) and Facebook (windowsphone). the amount of information for the other supported platforms is plentiful as well.

Other training resources include things like the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 Training Kit. This resource includes material covering major functional pieces such as Windows Communication Foundation (WPF), Windows Workflow, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and lots more. there are presentations, hands-on labs and demos to help get you up to speed on a wide range of technologies. be sure to check out this Channel 9 video for a good summary of available Visual Studio training materials.

Microsoft’s cloud offerings in the form of Windows Azure, SQL Server Azure and Office 365 overlap with many of the other platforms. there are tools for helping you get a better understanding of how the different products work together and specific training as well. the Windows Azure virtual lab provides a virtual training experience where you can stop and start to accommodate your busy schedule. You’ll find a host of other training resources on the Windows Azure Developer Center website.

If you’re a developer and have never used Visual Studio 2010 before, you’ve really missed out on a truly powerful environment. Microsoft offers a number of ways to put Visual Studio in your hands, from time limited trial versions of the full product to the free “Express” versions. for Windows Phone there’s a special Windows Phone Developer Tools download containing everything you need to get started including Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone (Beta) and lots more. if you already own Visual Studio, there’s the Windows Phone Software Development Kit (SDK)

If you’re looking to move an app up to the Windows Azure Platform or connect a mobile app with Microsoft’s cloud, you’ll get a jump start there as well with a 30-day Windows Azure trial. the Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows Phone is hosted on Microsoft’s Codeplex.com site, providing a much broader level of support than a simple community download. There’s even a link to the Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows 8 on the same page. for Windows-based apps there’s a Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio to help you integrate your desktop or server apps with Windows Azure.

Virtual machines are a great way to try out a particular platform or tool without the need to install everything on a dedicated machine. Microsoft has a number of virtual machines available for download to help you test different technologies this way. There’s a Visual Studio 2010 virtual machine, which includes Team Foundation Server to make it really easy to try out that technology. the HyperV version runs on Windows Server 2008 R2. other downloads are available for Microsoft Virtual PC for Windows 7 and for Virtual PC 2007.

Testing is as much a mindset and a methodology as it is a process. Most large-scale software projects use some type of automated testing to check their code. Unit testing is one of the most basic approaches to testing code, and Microsoft Visual Studio fully supports this technique in a number of different ways. in fact, there are entire methodologies (Test Driven Development or TDD) built around the idea of testing first. TDD is a branch of agile development, which Microsoft fully supports. Scrum is another agile software development methodology, which has full support in Microsoft’s Team Foundation Server product.

Visual Studio Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) is a product offering targeted at either large-scale development efforts or a large team of developers. It’s made up of a number of different products with Team Foundation Server at the core. Visual Studio Test Professional is a version of Visual Studio tailored to individuals directly involved in the testing or software quality assurance of a project. Microsoft Test Manager is another product in this suite designed to manage the running of test cases outside of the Visual Studio environment, utilizing both physical and virtual environments.

The Microsoft Platform Ready Test Tool is a generic name for the test tool you must run for any application to determine if it meets the requirements of the MPR program. each platform has a different set of requirements and tests that must be accomplished. the MPR Test Tool provides a guided process to ensure that all tests are satisfactorily completed. You’ll find informational videos explaining how to use the MPR Test Tool for each of the different platforms.

It’s important to understand the requirements for each platform before you get started with the testing process. for Windows Phone apps there are a number of things your app must have, including the use of a minimum of four Windows Phone features. the app must also fit into either the Business or Tools + Productivity categories in the Windows Phone Marketplace. there are complete details on the full requirements for each platform available under the Test heading on the MPR site. Microsoft also provides a modest amount of telephone support to assist you with testing or any other problems you might encounter along the way.

Once you’ve run your application through the MPR Test Tool process you’ll have a report detailing just how well it performed. if deficiencies are found, you’ll have the opportunity to address them and then retest if necessary. in some cases you might choose not to address a specific item that the MPR Test Tool identified. Microsoft does have a process in place for making an appeal for a waiver if you can make a good enough case. You’ll need to successfully pass the MPR Test Tool or get a waiver for any outstanding items before moving on to the marketing phase. This is Microsoft’s way of helping to ensure that only quality software products make it to the stage of certification as Microsoft Platform Ready.

If your app passes the Microsoft Platform Ready Mobility test, you’ll have access to a full range of marketing benefits to help get the word out. each of the platform areas have a dedicated marketing team focused on getting new apps noticed. there are individual market places for Windows Azure and Windows phone where Microsoft highlights approved applications. the Microsoft Pinpoint marketplace focuses on more traditional IT offerings including operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, Microsoft SQL Server and the range of productivity applications.

The big news here is that MPR brings the weight of the Microsoft marketing machine to bear on getting the message out about your application. Microsoft has made a concerted effort to take advantage of social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter in addition to more traditional forms of marketing. It does require a fair amount of work on the part of an Independent Software Vendor (ISV), but the potential payoff is definitely worth it.

From a developer’s perspective, the MPR program should be seen as a centralized place to get all the tools and information you might need to take a product from idea to income. there are no minimum business size requirements nor is there any cost involved to get started. It’s certainly worth checking out if you have any desire to see your application brought to market. MPR is perfect for existing ISVs looking to expand into new markets or to add new capabilities to existing product lines. Whatever your situation, you’ll want to give the Microsoft Platform Ready program a good hard look.

Dedicated Server Toronto Hosting » windows 2003 dedicated server hosting

User E-Mail QuestionMy business is not based on Bay Street, but I still need to find Dedicated Server Toronto Hosting. How can I find a cheap dedicated server for my Toronto (GTA) business?

Dedicated Server Toronto Hosting,HostIndex.com Response:Findingdedicated server hosting in Torontois not that difficult. first there are two ways to obtain dedicated server Toronto hosting. the first is to use a web hosting provider for your business that is physically based in Toronto itself. this will tend to be more expensive than choosing to host outside Toronto, but you can obtain local Canadian technical support services. If you are a large company and can afford aToronto dedicated serverphysically based in a Toronto IDC, we suggest you try bothBell CanadaandQ9. both of these Toronto dedicated server and managed hosting vendors offer top-quality Toronto dedicated servers for businesses and personal use.

the less expensive way to getDedicated Server Toronto Hostingis to consider a dedicated server hosted elsewhere (i.e. accessible from Toronto, but not physically located in the city). From a server administration and speed of access standpoint, you will likely get the same quality and results, but your monthly costs will be substantially lower. for instance, bothmidPhaseandHostGatoroffer low cost dedicated servers for Toronto buyers that start at around$99 a month. Since the Canadian dollar is very high you can realize much better monthly cost savings for your business and thus achieve considerable price reductions for Toronto dedicated hosting services by using a managed hosting server found outside Toronto. We also recommendHostGator Dedicated Serversfor all Dedicated Server Toronto Web Hosting buyers!

 Dedicated Server Toronto Hosting » windows 2003 dedicated server hosting

Lastly, you can choose to host your own dedicated server in-house. If you arrange to have an Internet connection brought in by a service provider such as Bell, Rogers, or otherwise, you can then set-up your own dedicated server and host it in house. In essence, you will be creating a one dedicated server internet data centre. However, this type of dedicated server toronto hosting is most likely going to cost you more than just buying a Toronto dedicated server from aspecialized dedicated hosting company.

If you have any questions aboutDedicated Server Torontodedicated server toronto hosting, you should speak to the web hosts that you are considering. If you are going to pay more than about $100 a month (US), there should be a reason for those extra managed hosting costs. Otherwise, you are likely spending money for Toronto Dedicated Server Web Hosting that you need not spend. So consider Dedicated Server Toronto Hosting from non-GTA providers such asSingleHopand you will likely save some money. At the very least, show the Toronto-based managed hosting business provider that you are considering selecting, quotes from non-Toronto dedicated server companies, and you may get aprice discountlocally. you will also need to consider whether you want aToronto Windows Dedicated Serveror aLinux Dedicated Serverdepending upon the technologies that your website requires you to run.

Bunye: ‘Guarding against email fraud’

1329901222 42 Bunye: ‘Guarding against email fraud’

Sunday, February 19, 2012

HAVE you ever received an e-mail from your bank or credit card company that looks like the “real thing”?

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas warns the public of circulating e-mails that “phish” from unsuspecting consumers: you receive a “real-looking” e-mail from what you think is your bank or credit card company, you give them your financial information (credit card or bank details), and before you know it, your money disappears faster than you can say poof!

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

According to the BSP Financial Consumer Affairs Group (FCAG), phishing is a common online virus spreading and identity theft method.

The term obviously comes from the word “fishing”—that is, “to fish for information.”

Phishing involves an unscrupulous person sending a fraudulent e-mail message that appears to come from a reputable source. this e-mail message aims to entice an individual to provide personal and confidential information such as user IDs, passwords, account and Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) that the phisher may illegally take advantage of.

Here are the common characteristics of phishing that the FCAG says we should watch out for:

• Phishing is often accompanied by spoofing. in a phishing e-mail, a hyperlink is often provided. When clicked, the hyperlink leads the user to a phony or spoofed website. It is here that the unsuspecting victim keys in his personal and financial data.

• Phishing is difficult to detect at a glance because it contains official-looking logos and other identifying information from legitimate organizations.

• A phishing e-mail normally starts with a generic greeting, such as “Dear Customer” or “To our valued client.” Phishers send out millions of messages to randomly generated e-mail addresses hoping that people who can relate to the message would reply to them. Banks, on the other hand, personalize their greetings and indicate your full name when sending official correspondences.

• Most phishing e-mails include threats requiring immediate action. they contain phrases such as “Verify your account, “Update your account,” and “Failure to do so will result in account suspension.”

• Phishing scams always request for your personal information. Most legitimate banks will not demand this information online or through e-mail.

• Phishing e-mails frequently misspell words or construct grammatically poor sentences. the FCAG reminds us that professional organizations such as banks usually have a team of copy editors who proofread and edit advisories/notices before they send them out to the public.

The FCAG has given us a list of what-to-dos in case we receive suspicious-looking mails:

• Do not reply to it. just ignore and delete the message.

• Do not click any links in the message. Instead, type the company’s website address directly on your browser or use your personal bookmarks when going to certain sites.

• Check if a website is secure by checking if the URL begins with an “https” and if a closed padlock icon is displayed on the browser’s status bar.

• be cautious about opening any attachment or downloading any file from e-mails that you receive. Scan files for viruses.

• As much as possible, do not disclose personal or financial information being asked through e-mail.

• if you think you have given out information to a phisher, report the incident immediately to the company that was spoofed.

• Routinely review bank and credit card statements for unexplained charges you did not initiate.

• Change the passwords and PINs of all your online accounts that you think may have been compromised. if possible, close those accounts.

The FCAG further warns us that phishing is not exclusive to e-mail form: scammers have become more resourceful and seek out victims through cell phone or SMS, chat rooms, fake banner ads, message boards and mailing lists, fake job search sites and job offers, and fake browser toolbars.

Vigilance is the best way to avoid being hooked by phishing.

King memorial group head angry at monument change

1329900049 60 King memorial group head angry at monument change

Published: February 11, 2012 2:47 PM by The Associated Press

WASHINGTON – (AP) — An organizer of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is criticizing plans to remove an inscription from the monument, saying the changes will threaten the design.

The National Park Service said Friday it would replace it with a full quotation from the civil rights leader.

Critics had complained the abbreviated quote on the memorial didn’t accurately reflect King’s words.

Harry Johnson is the president and CEO of the Martin Luther Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation. he says in a statement that he’s disappointed the King family and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar made a “unilateral decision” to change the memorial.

He says the new plan will “threaten the design, structure and integrity” of the monument. The project’s architect has taken a similar position, saying new granite added to the memorial would be a noticeably different color.

Apple drops claim to content created in iBooks Author

1329895219 84 Apple drops claim to content created in iBooks AuthorWhy risk it?

There’s a program called Sigil that you can use to create and edit epub files. the guy who’s writing it is going to bring in epub3 support soon. Why not just use (and support) that?

They didn't change the actual meaning..

They just clarified what they meant. Plenty of people understood that all they were claiming, is that if you use their tool to create something, that specific something (ie the .ibooks file) must only be distributed through them. They didn’t claim any rights over your actual work (the words, your images, etc), it was just a case of clumsy wording. I still don’t understand the controversy with this. It’s essentially a development kit, we don’t cry when the iOS SDK cannot produce iPhone applications, or the Windows Phone 7 SDK cannot produce Android applications, do we? It’s a specific tool created for a specific service. I thought that was pretty obvious from the moment they announced it.

Correction:

“don’t cry when the iOS SDK cannot produce WP7 applications”

'just a case of clumsy wording'?

@QassimF We’re talking about a legal contract. you can be sure as feck Apple’s legal team would pounce on any rival that used ‘clumsy wording’ in a defence to one of Apple’s endless lawsuits.

QassimF

You are completely right. It seemed obvious what they meant at the time and I didnt see any reason to question it. I think it was round the term ‘work’ which some people believed meant ‘content’ It’s ridiculous, they bring out a bit of software to make iBooks easier to create and they get lynched

"It's a specific tool created for a specific service"

You mean the creation of ePUB files, an open standard based on xhtml? I hate to burst your bubble but “iBooks” is just a way of reading ePUB files. the same ePUB files that the Kobi, Sony and any Android smartphone can read. this would be like Microsoft laying claim to every book written using MS Word or Adobe to every web site designed in Dreamweaver. Apple’s greed really is out of control now.

My Jury's still out

It appears they haven’t actually changed the precise wording of the contract, merely issued ‘clarification’. I rather doubt the clarification has any legal status, but the contract still does…. It is completely legitimate for Apple to promote its prprietary formats and closed ecosystem. Its also legitimate to criticise them for doing it. the WHOLE POINT of their proprietary ‘improvements’ to EPUB’s standard is to secure: a) ‘Monetization’ – i.e. they get a 30 %cut of a potentially gargantuan market, for virtually no effort. b) Lock-in – if they can pull the iTunes MP3 stunt with e-textbooks. As with the rest of the i-universe that Apppe is creating you pays yer money…., But I do have a gripe with the so-called ‘tech’ press which seems always uncritically to faun over everything Cupertino does or says.

few English majors here then

QassimF is dead right. Like I said at the time, it was all in the definition of the word ‘work’ and those with prejudices hung them out for the world to see. Oh, and the licence agreement HAS been changed. Jeez. Some people. I love their brain reading powers too. lol!

Nope

No lacrobat. iBooks author creates an iba format which is not the ePub format. Yes the iPad can read ePub and PDF but it can also read iba which no other device can because it is proprietary. Similar to the ePub format but has custom widget code

Im going to defend apple on this because I had to write my windows phone code in visual studio for windows phone and the resulting code could only be used on the. Windows phone. what is the difference?

Extract from the EULA

“if the work is provided for a fee (including as part of any subscription-based product or service) and includes files in the .ibooks format generated using iBooks Author, the work may only be distributed through Apple, and such distribution will be subject to a separate written agreement with Apple (or an Apple affiliate or subsidiary); provided, however, that this restriction will not apply to the content of the work when distributed in a form that does not include files in the .ibooks format generated using iBooks Author.” Ergo bugger all to do with ePUB.

@TimoGunt

You really expect Lacrobat to read that? – he just comes into a thread, trolls and moves onto the next one please can we have an ignore user function on these comments?

What, and miss all the fun with me? I’d miss you guys!

Missing the point

all this Visual studio for WP7 or iBook format for iOS is not the issue – Apple release an application that makes files which work only on their devises – Fine, no problem. It may be another lock-in, but that’s a minor concern. the problem is for Apple to be the sole distributor and the arbitrator way they decide IF you may sell it. Fair enough for them to have the right to choose what goes into the iTunes store, again, no problem. It’s the fact that you may not sell it in any other way, such as on another website or even if you want to sell a few copies yourself. that is just too far. How long before – or is it already in place – that you can buy anything for your iProducts ONLY through the iTunes store with Apple taking a 30% cut too?

who has done Contract law then?

The issue is not what you THINK the contract implies but what it says, so in this case the wording “includes files in the .ibooks format” means that if you want to release it in ibook format, amongst other format’s you will need their permission to do such. I have noticed that this sort of wording is happening a lot lately, not just with Apple but Google and Facebook.

Coming Soon Page :: PSD Sitebuild

1329892835 95 Coming Soon Page :: PSD Sitebuild

Today we will be entering the third step of our Beginning to end Series, coding our Coming Soon Page. If you haven’t viewed the photoshop tutorial you can view it here.

Set up your folders like such:

We need to start out by slicing the PSD. For our coming soon page we only have a little bit to slice. We need to slice the submit button, the social network navigation buttons, and a portion of the background for repetition, and the full background.I always like to save my images as a PNG and optimize them for the web through photoshop. there are times when you need to use JPG but for most cases PNG will work the best. JPG should be used only when the image needs to be high quality, such as a photograph.

Now that we have our document images sliced it is time to start coding our document. First we will set up the start of our HTML document.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /><title>:: We are Coming Soon ::</title><link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /></head> <body>

Now it is time to set up our CSS file before we move on to the rest of our document. As you can see in our HTML heading we will be using a separate style sheet titled style.css

@charset "utf-8";/* CSS Document */body { background-image: url(Images/backgroundrepeat.png); background-repeat: repeat;}h1 { font-family: "Cooper Black"; font-size: 68px; color: #FFF;}.content { background-image: url(Images/background.png); background-repeat: no-repeat; float: left; height: 768px; width: 1280px; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; margin-top: 0px;}.contenttext { float: left; height: auto; width: auto; margin-top: 160px; margin-left: 60px; font-family: "Cooper Black"; font-size: 30px; color: #FFF;}.newsletter { clear: none; float: left; height: auto; width: 755px; margin-top: 25px; margin-left: 60px;}.field{ float:left;} .field input{ /* the text boxes */ font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:22px; background:url("img/box_bg.png") repeat-x scroll left top #FFFFFF; outline:none; /* Preventing the default Safari and Chrome text box highlight */ -moz-border-radius:10px; -webkit-border-radius:6px; border-radius:6px; padding-top: 8px; padding-right: 5px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 8px;} .signupButton{ /* the submit button container */ text-align:center; float: left; padding-right: 0; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 0; padding-top: -10px; margin-left: 15px;} #submit{ /* the submit button */ cursor:pointer; height:54px; text-indent:-9999px; text-transform:uppercase; width:170px; background-image: url(Images/signup.png); background-repeat: no-repeat; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none;}.socialnetworking{ clear: both; float: left; margin-left: 70%; margin-top: 115px; font-family: "Cooper Black"; font-size: 24px; color: #FFF; white-space: normal; width: 303px;}–>

Our CSS starts out with the body tag which will use our sliced portion of the background to repeat on a larger screen. It then details our content to use our full sliced background image as the divs bg image. by setting the left and right margins to auto we are centering the div on a screen larger than 1280 wide. you must specify the width of a div if you are to use auto margins to center a div.

We are using CSS3 for our coming soon page; which means that this page will render differently in IE than it will in Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. Luckily CSS3 is going to be supported in IE9 which will help to maintain Cross Browser Compatibility.

Now we will set up the remainder of our HTML document to give our welcome text.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /><title>:: We are Coming Soon ::</title><link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /></head> <body><div class="content"> <div class="contenttext"> <h1>We are Coming Soon</h1> We are releasing a new website on [date here]. <br />please keep checking back or sign up for our <br />newsletter and we will let you know!</div>

It is now time to set up our newsletter. the first thing that we will do is set up our form.

<div class="newsletter"> <form action="MailForm.php" method="POST"><input type="hidden" name="recipient" value=""><input type="hidden" name="subject" value="Coming Soon Signup"><input type="hidden" name="redirect" value="thankyou.htm"><input type="hidden" name="required" value="email"><input type="hidden" name="errorpage" value="error.htm"><div class="field"> <input name="email" type="text" id="email" size="45" /></div> <div class="signupButton"> <input type="submit" name="submit" id="submit" /> </div> </form>

As you can see we detail a few things at the start of our form. you must put in your email address, the subject title, the link to the thank you page, and the link to the error page

Now that we have finished up our signup aspect of the HTML it is time to set up our Social Networking. We will simply be using the images for our social networking. you can view this tutorial to learn how to make them pop-up on rollover.

Here is our final HTML including the newsletter:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /><title>:: We are Coming Soon ::</title><link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /></head> <body><div class="content"> <div class="contenttext"> <h1>We are Coming Soon</h1> We are releasing a new website on [date here]. <br />please keep checking back or sign up for our <br />newsletter and we will let you know!</div> <div class="newsletter"> <form action="MailForm.php" method="POST"><input type="hidden" name="recipient" value=""><input type="hidden" name="subject" value="Coming Soon Signup"><input type="hidden" name="redirect" value="thankyou.htm"><input type="hidden" name="required" value="email"><input type="hidden" name="errorpage" value="error.htm"><div class="field"> <input name="email" type="text" id="email" size="45" /></div> <div class="signupButton"> <input type="submit" name="submit" id="submit" /> </div> </form> </div> <div class="socialnetworking"><img src="Images/twitter.jpg" width="99" height="51" border="0" /><img src="Images/facebook.jpg" width="100" height="51" /><img src="Images/myspace.jpg" width="101" height="51" /></div></div></body></html><?phpif ($_POST[recipient] && $_POST[subject] && $_POST[redirect]) { if ($_POST[required]) { $rfields = explode (",",$_POST[required]); foreach ($rfields as $check) { if (!$_POST[$check]) { header("Location: ".$_POST[errorpage]); exit(); } } } if ($_POST[autoresponse] && $_POST[email]) { $html = file_get_contents($_POST[autoresponse]) or die("<b><font color="#ff0000">Not a valid autoresponse page…</font><b>"); if ($html) { $tit_start = strpos($html,"<title>")+7; $tit_end = strpos($html,"</title>")-$tit_start; $mailsubject = $html; $mailsubject = substr($mailsubject, $tit_start, $tit_end); mail($_POST[email], $mailsubject, $html, "from: $_POST[autoresponsefrom]<$_POST[recipient]>rn"."MIME-Version: 1.0n"."Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"); } } else if (!$_POST[email]) { echo "<b><font color="#ff0000">Email field required when using autoresponse mail…</font></b>"; exit(); } $ndata = array("recipient","subject","required","errorpage",); $postfields = $_REQUEST; foreach ($postfields as $k => $v) { if (in_array($k,$ndata)) unset($postfields[$k]); else $msg .= $k.": ".$v."n"; } mail($_POST[recipient],$_POST[subject],$msg,"from: $_POST[email]rn"."Reply-To: $_POST[email]rn"); header("Location: ".$_POST[redirect]);}else echo "<b><font color="#ff0000">Recipient, subject or redirect field is missing…</font></b>";?>

Now we have to create the Thank you and Error Pages. here is the HTML for the Thank you Page, which should be saved as thankyou.htm

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /><title>Coming Soon :: Thank you ::</title><link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /></head> <body><div class="content"> <div class="contenttext"> <h1>Thank you!</h1> Thank you for submitting your email. We will<br /> send you an email as soon as the site is ready and<br />you will have first access!</div> <div class="socialnetworking"><a href="#"><img src="Images/twitter.jpg" width="99" height="51" border="0" /></a><a href="#"><img src="Images/facebook.jpg" width="100" height="51" /></a><a href="#"><img src="Images/myspace.jpg" width="101" height="51" /></a></div></div> </body></html>

Our HTML page for the error page is very basic for something like this. As long as they enter their email address they will not have an error. So here is our error page:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /><meta name="keywords" content="rye, country home realty, real estate, 0 lawrence dr, rye colorado real estate, rye real estate" /><meta name="description" content="Rye Country Home Realty is your first stop for all real estate needs in Rye, CO" /><title>Untitled Document</title></head> <body> Your application has an error on it. please return to the Page and try again. Thank you!</body></html>

Now that you are finished you just need to upload your files. you should have something like this:
